ZADAN – WEARER’S PERSPECTIVE

(Jewellery Art lecture series in Spring 2021)

Over the past two decades in contemporary jewellery art, formal and material explorations have been given much higher priority over how jewellery establishes relationships among people: the maker (artist), the wearer (user), and the viewer (reception/public).

Once jewellery pieces depart from jewellers’ workshops, they start developing lives of their own, away from the makers’ intentions. They are received in hands of owners (wearers), worn on the body, and start developing further personal meanings and jewellery-wearer object histories. Jewellery can subtly but effectively aid wearers to articulate their desired self-presentation; it can elucidate the wearer’s memberships and affiliations in society and publicly demonstrate broad ranges of unspoken messages. Furthermore, through jewellery pieces social and personal histories are remembered, traced, and become accessible. How then should jewellery makers accommodate wearers’ wishes and cosmology in design?

Jewellery Art at HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design hosted the following seven lectures with eight speakers in Spring 2021 as a response to the subject ZADAN LECTURES SPRING 2021—WEARER’S PERSPECTIVE. This ZADAN seriessought to advocate the intrinsic relationship between people, society, and jewellery, by paying close attention to wearers of jewellery. The lectures were funded by the generous support of Göteburgs Slöjdförening (The Gothenburg Society of Crafts and Design).

ZADAN
The aim of the ZADAN lecture series is to create a common platform, to broaden an understanding of jewellery art based on an exploration of a specific topic. The lectures series title ‘ZADAN’(座談) references the Japanese concept of a conversation among peers. With this in mind, we welcome students and publics to participate as peers in the consideration of Jewellery Art as a relational everyday practice and adornment.

All students studying Jewellery Art on BA and MA levels are invited to take part in this collective educational project, ZADAN – WEARER’S PERSPECTIVE. We hope ZADAN will facilitate stronger ties between our education at HDK-Valand and with communities, local, national, and international.
